City Offers Gary Boyn the First Coeur de Cerf (Heart of the Elk) Award

September 1, 2014

Years of investment refining the city center do not go unnoticed in this northern Indiana community, even for those who work quietly behind the scenes. In an effort to recognize major contributors, the city developed a special award, the Coeur de Cerf. Warrick & Boyn Partner, Gary Boyn, is the first recipient of this award.

Boyn’s recognized involvement in the downtown district includes leadership in the revival of the Lerner Theatre, the development of the Elkhart Riverwalk, the Civic Plaza and the East Bank Project Area. These four public projects transformed the landscape of downtown Elkhart. Boyn’s steady leadership and legal assistance were instrumental in moving each project to completion.

“Gary Boyn is the go-to person for downtown Elkhart,” states Diana Lawson, Executive Director for the Elkhart County CVB and Vice-President of the Lerner Governing Board. “If you want the right advice, the real truth, Gary is the guy. He is both practical and encouraging.”

Lawson went on to describe the city and Lerner Board’s process as they contemplated a recipient for the first Coeur de Cerf award. “We looked for quiet leaders, not necessarily those making public speeches but leaders who steadily move large projects forward through completion… Gary is the link; he connects history, knowledge of the community, and people.”

Boyn’s public service includes 40 years as legal counsel for the Elkhart Redevelopment Commission, Aurora Capital Development Corporation and Elkhart Urban Enterprise Association, Inc. He has 20 years of service as President of the Elco Theatre Commission and the Lerner Governing Board.

“It is a great honor to serve the people of Elkhart and see positive changes happening in our community,” says Boyn. “I appreciate all those who work together to rejuvenate our city.”

Boyn formerly served in a leadership capacity on a number of municipal and community boards including the Elkhart City Board of Public Works and Safety, National New York Central Railroad Museum Commission, Premier Arts, Inc., Elkhart City Bar Association, Elkhart Lions Club, Elkhart County Council on Aging, Inc., and ADEC, Inc.
