Each year, the Indiana University South Bend Judd Leighton School of Business and Economics honors one individual in the Michiana region whose leadership contributed to an enhanced quality of life in the community. The latest recipient of the Lewis S. Armstrong award is Gary Boyn, a senior partner at Elkhart-based law firm of Warrick & Boyn, LLP.
As a lawyer and civic leader, Boyn has an outstanding record of service to the Elkhart community. Over the last thirty years, as counsel for the Redevelopment Commission and as a volunteer, Boyn has played a significant role. He often in coordinated with private enterprise in major development projects in the community including redevelopment efforts at the Central Plaza, the Elkhart Foundry Site, the former Burnstine Site, the Elkhart Riverwalk, East Bank, Main Street redevelopment sites, and the IUSB downtown campus, and establishment of the redevelopment, urban renewal, economic development and TIF allocation areas throughout the City. For the last twenty years, he has served as President of the ELCO Theatre Commission, the ELCO Advisory Board and now the Lerner Governing Board, which have been responsible for the establishment of the management structures for the Lerner operations, oversight of its operations, and coordination of its development efforts. As part of those efforts, he has served on the SoMa Planning Committee, which effort is now also under the oversight of the Lerner Governing Board, and is President of the newly formed Friends of the Lerner, Inc., which has been established to assist the Lerner and SoMa in their fund raising and downtown promotions efforts.
Arthur J. Decio, serves with Gary on the Lerner Governing Board, and nominated him for this recognition. Mr. Decio recently explained:
“I nominated Gary because he’s outstanding! He does a great job at the firm and he has done so many things for our community. But few people may know it,” said Mr. Decio. He described Boyn’s approach as influencing many large public-private projects in Elkhart. “He had a plan – and it was different; different from what the professionals said it would take to get it done. But we got it done.” Mr. Decio credited Boyn’s approach to expediting projects and moving them from concepts to completion.
Boyn earned his J.D. from Valparaiso University. In his practice at Warrick & Boyn, Gary conducts a general civil practice with special emphasis on business structuring and planning, municipal law, commercial law and all aspects of bankruptcy law.
